Amazon India 2020 annual report: 1.5 lakh new Indian sellers entered Amazon in 2020

Mumbai, India (CWBN)_ Jeff Bezos’ e-commerce giant Amazon India released its 2020 annual report. The report detailed the development of its small and medium-scale sellers in the marketplace in 2020. The report said that a total of 4,152 sellers exceeded sales of INR 1 crore, and the count of crorepati sellers increased 29 per cent annually. 

The company listed some of the main seller-side accomplishments during the Covid year 2020. The list includes: a total of 1.5 lakh new sellers entered Amazon in 2020 where over 50,000 sellers registered in Hindi and Tamil; Amazon Business marketplace raised 85 percent annually in sales; above 70,000 exporters in Amazon Global Selling crossed $2 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports; and more than 1 lakh Indian developers building for Alexa globally etc.

Amit Agarwal, Senior VP and Country Head of Amazon India stated, “Technology adoption and digitization will continue to play a crucial role in offering expanded access and opportunities to SMBs, and we remain committed to invest and partner in their success”. The company claims that it is working with more than 10 lakh small and medium-sized companies in India, including retailers, suppliers and logistics partners, neighborhood shops, businesses, developers, content creators and writers. At present, Amazon has more than 7 lakh sellers on its market.

According to the report, the women entrepreneurs who are selling their products in Amazon India under the Saheli program registered nearly 15X growth in their companies, while the weavers and artisans who sell under Karigar program witnessed a 2.8X growth in their businesses. A detailed state-wise report on the top 10 states and union territories with the highest number of sellers was also released by Amazon. As per the report, Delhi stood first with 1.1 lakh sellers; Maharashtra stood second with 87,000 sellers; and Gujarat in third with 79,000 sellers.

During this year’s festive season sales, Amazon was beaten by its rival Walmart-owned Flipkart. According to a report released in November which evaluated the festive period sales from mid-October to mid-November 2020, Flipkart gained about 66 percent share of the total gross merchandise value (GMV) worth $8.3 billion, while Amazon remained with a 34 percent share. This year’s festive month witnessed total online revenues rise by 65 percent from $5 billion in sales last year, while the two e-commerce giants earned nearly 90 percent of $8.3 billion GMV.
