KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CWBN)_ The government of the United States congratulated Malaysia on its success in hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, which commenced on November 19, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

He added that the Kuala Lumpur Declaration and Putrajaya Vision 2040, which were issued at the Summit, would be a new aspiration for regional economic growth for the APEC community over the next 20 years.

The Putrajaya Vision established goals and aspirations in trade and investment, as well as innovation and digitalisation, to achieve a strong, balanced, secure, sustainable and inclusive economic growth within the region.

On the other hand, the Kuala Lumpur Declaration mainly focuses on addressing challenges faced by the region’s economies amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The PM said that the congratulatory message was conveyed by US Ambassador to Malaysia, Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, who paid a courtesy call on him yesterday (Nov 24).

Muhyiddin said that the ambassador had also shared with him the latest developments on the Covid-19 vaccines candidates being developed by US biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and undergoing the testing and approval process by the Food and Drug Administration of the US. Several other matters, including trade, investment, finance, education, geopolitical issues as well as international security were also discussed during the phone call.

The PM stated that he conveyed the Malaysian government’s appreciation to President Donald Trump for representing the US at this year’s Summit, and expressed his desire to further strengthen the long-standing relationship between the United States and Malaysia.
