Will they be stripped?

-

LONDON (CU)_Over the past few days, Meghan and Harry were criticised for cashing in on their royal past, as the couple announced a multi-million pound deal with the American production company Netflix on the Invictus Games.

Unhappy fans took it to social media to express their fury over how the Sussexes were able to work on the docuseries all thanks to their royal status.

This followed British broadcaster Piers Morgan’s interview with US news personality Tucker Carlson, during which he criticised the Duke and Duchess for their commercial deals with Spotify and Netflix. He claimed that the couple is not making money through talent, adding that Meghan was “an OK actress on a show not many people watched”.

Although Morgan has been critical of the couple since their decision to withdraw from the British royal family duties last year, however, it was the couple’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey last month that prompted the broadcaster to launch a “verbal boxing match”, as described by a royal biographer, against Meghan.

Now it is the same interview that has led most Brits to believe Meghan and Harry should be stripped of their royal titles. After gathering opinions for three weeks since the tell-all interview aired, pollsters from Deltapoll found that 58 per cent of the public believe the couple should not be allowed to use the titles.

Following their exit from royal duties, Meghan and Harry agreed to give up their titles “His and Her Royal Highness”, although Harry still remains a prince as he is sixth in line to the throne. The pair also agreed to stop using the word “royal” in the charitable and commercial ventures. However, following the recent explosive interview with Oprah, many believe that it’s not enough.

During the conversation, the Duke and Duchess made a series of shocking allegations, including a claim that a member of the Firm raised concerns regarding how dark their son Archie’s skin might be. Although though there were some viewers, particularly in the US, who believed the allegations, polls reveal that more than 30 per cent of Brits say the interview made no difference to the reputation of the monarchy, while 9 per cent believe it in fact improved the reputation.

While it has been reported that senior Palace courtiers have held crisis talks over if the couple should lose their titles after the incident, it is however unlikely that Harry’s dukedom will be taken away. Particularly given the fact that courtiers were keen for him to retain the right to be addressed as HRH, even after his withdrawal from royal duties, as this title was conveyed on him at birth.
