Pandemic had a mixed impact on the manufacturing sector

NAIROBI (CU)_Since March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began to ravage the lives and livelihoods of millions of people, manufacturing sectors across the globe have been reporting a sharp downturn in activities, with supply chains disrupted and shortages in resources. Nevertheless, the global health crisis is said to have had a mixed impact on the industry in Kenya, with half of the manufacturing sector recording a growth while the other half suffering huge losses.

After a delay of several months, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) published the Economic Survey 2021 late last week, which revealed that sub-sectors dealing in motor vehicles, leather, rubber, beverages and dairy products contracted, while growth was registered by others such as pharmaceutical products, basic metals, non-metallic products, sugar and processed food.
