VANCOUVER (CU)_Elk River, in the south-eastern Kootenay district of British Columbia, is heavily contaminated by mining pollutants which have been leaching from coal mines located in the Canadian province. Over the past six years several state, tribal and federal agencies have analysed the water quality of the river, which enters the American state of Montana at the US-Canada border, and have agreed on a protective water quality standard that is required to safeguard fish species and other wildlife.
