Sh6bn in titanium mining royalties demanded from the government

KWALE (CU)_Over the past few months, the youth in the Kwale County of Kenya have been demanding the government to release millions of dollars in mining royalties owed to them by Base Titanium, the operator of the country’s largest sand mine. The company, the local Kenyan subsidiary of Australian-based Base Resources group, says the funds, amounting to about Sh6 billion (nearly US$55 million), accrued over the past six years, have already been remitted to the government, while the Mining Cabinet Secretary previously noted that a special panel has been formed to how the royalties will be distributed among local governments and individuals.
