What is the Difference between Queen and Queen Consort?

spot_imgspot_img

The passing away of Queen Elizabeth, brought her son Prince Charles to the throne as her rightful successor, thus giving him the title of King Charles III. His wife, Camilla, is now bestowed with the title of Queen Consort.

A Queen Consort is the spouse or the companion of the King. It is not a formal role and as such now, does not hold any right to power. It is, however, a symbol of the support the holder of the title gives the Monarch.

A Queen Regant, similar to Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth II herself, is a ruler in her own right. The title of a Queen Regant is different from that of a Queen Consort, for the former is a ruler and holds the reins of the kingdom, whereas the latter is a support system to the ruler of the kingdom.

Historically, male spouses to the Queen Regant have taken on the title Prince Consort rather than King Consort.

However, the proposed title of Princess Consort for Camilla was “a bit of a compromise”, royal family historian Dr Cindy McCreery explains.

Camilla and Charles married in the year 2006 in a civil ceremony at Guildhall in Windsor. The Queen, as head of the Anglican Church, did not attend the ceremony, but did host and attend the reception at Windsor Castle afterwards.

In February 2022, the Queen said in a special Platinum Jubilee message that it was now her “sincere wish” that Camilla be known as Queen Consort when Charles came to the throne.

Whilst Queen Consort is the formal term, no one refers to the person holding the title as Queen Consort. In practice, they’re both announced King and Queen.
