The Canadian Government honoured a few citizens with a Platinum Jubilee Medal in celebration of the seventieth anniversary of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. The medal was presented to those citizens who had displayed great service towards Canada.

Prominent businessmen Ganesan Sugumar and Kula Sellathurai are two of the people with Sri Lankan roots who received this honour due to their exceptional work towards social development as a result of their rapidly growing businesses. For years, the duo has been working towards the improvement of the Sri Lanka and Canada bilateral trade sector through many different business ventures and organisations. These two gentlemen have also been collecting and donating millions of dollars towards the development and enhancement of hospitals in Canada.

Furthermore, Sugumar recruits youth who are specially abled with conditions like down syndrome to work for his business, thus providing a platform for the specially abled community to display their talents and showcase their skill. This initiative has improved the lives of many children providing them with a brighter future.

Receiving this honour, and knowing that Sri Lankans around the world are bringing pride and glory to their country through their work is truly an achievement to be cherished, and a proud moment for all Sri Lankans.
