Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ The BRICS alliance, comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is dedicated to creating a more inclusive and just global framework. Its primary goal is not to counter the West or rival the G7, but rather to advocate for the interests of the Global South and encourage cooperative discourse among its member nations. Since its inception in 2006, BRICS has attracted significant attention from various developing countries. It operates vital institutions, including a development bank and a contingency reserve arrangement, aimed at providing support to its members and other developing economies. The alliance embodies a collective effort to address shared challenges and advance the developmental aspirations of its constituents. A significant outcome of the June 2009 Yekaterinburg summit underlines the group’s aims and interests: facilitating “incremental, proactive, pragmatic, open, and transparent” interaction among its nations, with the overarching goal of not only representing the collective interests of emerging market economies and developing countries but also nurturing a harmonious global environment characterized by lasting peace and mutual prosperity.

Recently, Anil Sooklal, South Africa’s ambassador to BRICS, highlighted that nearly 30 countries have either formally applied for membership or expressed a keen desire to join the group. The question of expanding the BRICS partnership, which brings together the leading emerging economies – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, will take center stage at the forthcoming 15th BRICS summit, scheduled to convene in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 22 to 24. The BRICS assembly serves as a crucial platform for the member countries to engage in discussions aimed at expanding their reach and impact. This emphasizes the alliance’s dedication to nurturing a global order that is more equitable and harmonious, one that takes into account the concerns and needs of the wider international populace. Through such deliberations, BRICS reaffirms its commitment to creating a balanced and fair global system that better represents the interests of the global community at large.
