Australia enforces strict visa rules

-

Australia has implemented stricter visa regulations for international students as part of efforts to manage migration levels following a surge in arrivals. The new measures, which came into effect on March 23, entail heightened English language proficiency requirements for student visas. Additionally, the government now possesses authority to suspend educational institutions found repeatedly violating regulations related to recruiting international students.

In a statement, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil emphasized the significance of these measures in aligning with the government’s migration strategy. O’Neil stated that the actions taken are aimed at addressing the challenges inherited by the previous administration while concurrently working towards rectifying shortcomings within the migration system.

One of the key components of the new regulations is the introduction of a “genuine student test” intended to prevent individuals from exploiting student visas for employment purposes rather than genuine educational pursuits. Moreover, the government will enforce “no further stay” conditions on visitor visas to ensure compliance with the stipulated visa terms.

These recent developments follow a series of actions undertaken in the previous year to phase out COVID-era exceptions introduced during the pandemic. Notably, such exceptions included the provision of unrestricted working hours for international students, which are now being revoked.

The surge in migration to Australia in 2022, partially driven by increased yearly migration numbers aimed at mitigating labor shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has placed additional strain on the housing market. The influx of foreign workers and students has intensified demand for rental housing, exacerbating existing supply shortages across the country.

According to data from Australia’s Department of Education, the number of international students in the country has reached over 567,000 as of January 2024, representing a substantial 26 percent increase compared to the previous year. Predominantly hailing from Asian countries, with China, India, Nepal, the Philippines, and Vietnam among the top five contributing nations, international students play a significant role in Australia’s education sector and broader economy.

Australia’s population surged by 2.5 percent in the previous year, marking the fastest increase on record, reaching a total of 26.8 million people. While record migration has expanded the labor pool, it has simultaneously alleviated pressures to raise wages, a factor that has been closely monitored by policymakers.

Minister O’Neil highlighted the impact of government interventions since September, attributing a notable decrease in migration levels to these measures. Notably, recent approvals for international student visas have declined by 35 percent compared to the preceding year, indicating a tangible shift in migration dynamics.

In conclusion, Australia’s implementation of stricter visa regulations for international students reflects a proactive approach towards managing migration levels and addressing challenges stemming from increased arrivals. By prioritizing genuine educational pursuits and reinforcing regulatory compliance, the government aims to achieve a balanced migration framework conducive to sustainable economic growth and societal well-being.
