Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Mbale Regional Referral Hospital has reinforced its dedication to providing uninterrupted healthcare services despite growing concerns over the recent Ebola outbreak. While the virus has triggered heightened vigilance, the hospital remains fully operational, ensuring that essential medical care continues for the communities it serves.

On January 31, 2025, the Ugandan Ministry of Health officially declared the outbreak following the referral of a confirmed case from Mbale Regional Referral Hospital. In response, the government swiftly intensified surveillance measures to contain the virus and prevent further transmission. All confirmed cases are now receiving specialized treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, a move designed to centralize care and limit local spread.

As of February 3, Mulago’s Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) is managing four active cases: two male children and two female adults, while nine additional individuals remain under close observation. Tragically, the outbreak has already claimed one life. Meanwhile, health authorities are also closely monitoring cases beyond Mbale, including two confirmed infections in female adults, one of whom is a nurse in Tororo. At least 34 contacts linked to these cases are under strict observation, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance.

The City Resident Commissioner has established a dedicated Ebola task force in Mbale to coordinate response efforts and ensure rapid intervention. So far, 24 individuals identified as potential contacts have been placed under quarantine at Mbale City Health Centre, designated as a temporary holding facility for suspected cases. Health officials report that all quarantined individuals remain stable, with no symptoms currently observed.

Dr. Atek Kagirita, Deputy Incident Commander at the Ministry of Health, has called for public cooperation, urging citizens to report any symptoms immediately. He stressed that early detection and rapid medical response are critical in preventing further spread. His message resonates as officials work tirelessly to enhance screening, strengthen community awareness, and enforce strict isolation protocols.

Despite the outbreak, Mbale Regional Referral Hospital remains committed to its mission. Acting Director Daniel Mwayafu assured residents of the hospital’s readiness to handle emergencies and provide regular medical services. Schools, transport systems, and businesses continue to operate under reinforced preventive measures, as the government prioritizes containment without disrupting daily life.

Public health officials continue to emphasize safety protocols, including regular handwashing, avoiding direct contact with suspected cases, and seeking immediate medical attention for symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or unexplained bleeding. With a determined national response and unwavering commitment from healthcare workers, Uganda remains steadfast in its fight against Ebola, ensuring that the outbreak is controlled swiftly and effectively.
