Global (Commonwealth Union) _ The Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple experienced a series of shootings last week, spanning from June 29 to July 1. The ISKCON temple located in Spanish Fork, Utah, is a renowned religious and cultural landmark that is celebrated for hosting vibrant festivals each year. The attacks that occurred after nightfall were seen to have caused significant damage to the temple, with an estimated 20 to 30 bullets being fired over the course of several days.

Investigating the incident, the local police discovered that the multiple rounds fired shattered windows and struck the temple’s hand-carved arches. The restoration work to fix the structural damage caused could cost tens of thousands of dollars. Authorities have classified the serial shooting as a potential “hate crime” due to the targeted and repetitive nature of the attacks.

According to reports by temple officials, at least one of the shootings had taken place while worshippers had been present at the temple, resulting in the evening prayers being suspended temporarily and the attendees having to seek shelter indoors. Even though none of the worshippers sustained injuries, the event has deeply unsettled the community and reignited discussions about religious intolerance.

The Indian Consulate in San Francisco has responded to the attack swiftly and has issued a statement condemning the violence brought on by the serial shooting and urging the U.S. authorities to ensure justice.

The temple’s management also claimed that staff had noticed smoke rising from the radio station roof of the building, prior to the attack, on June 18. The following days saw several bullet marks on a window and other parts of the temple’s structure, with small shell casings being found outside the property.

The attack on the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple has not been an isolated one, with several other places of Hindu worship in America having been subjected to vandalism, including in California, Sacramento, and New York.

While the motives behind the attacks remain uncertain, organizations such as the Coalition of Hindus of North America have expressed concern and have urged law enforcement to investigate the attacks thoroughly, mentioning the emotional and cultural impact on the relevant communities.
