Sparking tensions, this move is under the administration of Donald Trump in the U.S. and has had attempts of weakening or even pausing the proposal altogether.
The proposed resolution is designed to strengthen international action following a landmark advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice in 2025. The court determined that countries have legal obligations to address climate change and prevent environmental harm. If governments fail to take meaningful action, they could potentially face legal consequences or be required to compensate nations suffering from climate-related damage. Vanuatu is one of the country’s most vulnerable to extreme weather events as well as rising sea levels, which is one of the reasons it is leading a global call for climate justice.
However, the United States has made sure that the initiative would face significant resistance, particularly due to its economic interests and political stance on climate change policies.
