Padma Awards stage turns emotional as Hema Malini accepts Dharmendra’s honour in tears!

Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ Veteran actress Hema Malini got emotional as she received the Padma Vibhushan Award on behalf of her late husband, legendary actor Dharmendra, at the Padma Awards 2026 ceremony. President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious honour to Dharmendra for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema and his lasting legacy in the film industry. Hema Malini arrived at the ceremony dressed in an elegant light pink saree with intricate embroidery. She was accompanied by her daughter, Ahana Deol. As Dharmendra’s name was announced during the event, the veteran actress folded her hands in gratitude before walking toward the stage.

The moment quickly turned emotional as she received the award with tears in her eyes, remembering the man who had been her partner for decades. The touching tribute deeply moved those present at the ceremony. Ahana Deol was also seen wiping away tears as she watched her mother accept the honour in memory of her father. The emotional scene became one of the most memorable moments of the evening, reflecting the deep respect and love the Deol family continues to hold for Dharmendra, fondly remembered by millions as Bollywood’s original “He-Man.”

Before the ceremony, Hema Malini had spoken about how meaningful the recognition was for the family after Dharmendra’s passing in 2025. In a conversation, she described the occasion as emotional and unforgettable. She shared that while Ahana accompanied her to the ceremony, Esha Deol could not attend. She also mentioned that Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and the rest of the family were proud and happy about the honour. Hema Malini also shared an emotional note on Instagram after the event, talking about how overwhelming the experience had been for her. As she walked towards the stage, she said that she felt Dharmendra was with her and guiding her through the special moment. The actress described it as a deeply personal experience filled with memories and emotions.

The Padma Vibhushan is India’s second-highest civilian honour after the Bharat Ratna. It is awarded to individuals for exceptional and distinguished service in different fields, including art, cinema, literature and public service. Dharmendra’s recognition was celebrated across the country by fans, actors and members of the film fraternity, many of whom believe his contribution to Hindi cinema remains unmatched. Dharmendra died in November 2025, aged 89. Tributes poured in from all over India following his death, with fans and celebrities remembering him as one of the most loved and respected stars in the history of Indian cinema.
