Paris, France (CWBN)_ The French National Police reported that a priest from the Greek Orthodox faith was shot in the stomach while closing his church, yesterday (31st October), using a sawed off shotgun.

The 52 year old priest, Nikolaos Kakavelaki, has been hospitalised and is in critical condition.

Witnesses have claimed that the assailant was wearing a black coat and beanie, and seen running from the church, having fired his gun twice. A suspected person has been detained by the police, but the details behind the incident are still unclear.

The shooting follows a series of several terrorist attacks that have taken place in France with regard to the country’s stance on freedom of speech and expression, which led to the deployment of over 4000 military personnel to schools and places of worship on Thursday (29th October).
