PARIS, France (CWBN)_ Third seed Daniil Medvedev claimed his first Rolex Paris Masters title, after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev at Bercy Arena on Sunday (Nov 08).

The 24-year-old Russian won 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, to secure his first trophy of the season and the eighth of his career.

“It’s great, I’m really happy. As I always say, I don’t always show this after matches, but I’m always happy to win,” Medvedevsaid. “Before this tournament I wasn’t in great form, zero finals this year and I was crying, well complaining, to my wife, ‘Oh my God, I don’t have the level, not playing well, not even any finals’,” he added.

Fourth seed Zverev, who had won five of his six previous meetings with Medvedev, claimed he was exhausted at the end of the second set.

“You know, he’s very composed. He’s going to make you run for every point,” Zverev said of Medvedev.

The world No 7 and Grand Slam finalist played for the first time this week, since his former girlfriend Olga Sharypova accused him of serious physical assault, claiming that she attempted to take her own life after Zverev punched her during an argument at last year’s Laver Cup in Geneva.

“For a professional athlete there are always going to be people who try to wipe the smile off your face. So they can keep trying. I’m still smiling,” Zverev said, after Sunday’s match.
