New York, USA (CWBN)_ According to reports by the National Hurricane Centre (US), Hurricane Iota made land fall in Nicaragua, last night (16th Nov) at around 10:40pm (EST), with wing speeds reaching 249.45 km per hour (155 miles per hour).

The storm made landfall just 24.14 km (15 miles) from where Hurricane Eta had touched down just two weeks ago, killing about 200 people. It is expected that the storm’s path would take it further into Nicaragua and then into southern Honduras, however, the Centre noted earlier today that the strength of the storm has dropped to about 165 km per hour (105 miles per hour).

Hundreds of people from indeginous communities were awaiting evacuation in Bilwi, earlier on Monday, having already faced Eta.

One person has reportedly died in Providencia, Nicargua and the region has lost power, including the regional hospital.

Even though, the storm is expected to diminish as it presses further inland, the devastation left behind by both Iota and Eta are significant, and adds to the count of 30 storms and 13 hurricanes recoreded thus far.
