London, UK (CWBN)_ The vaccination campaign dubbed ‘V’ Day, is set to launch today with 800,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine due to be administered to persons over the age of 80, who have been infected by the virus, healthcare workers and care home staff.

UK is the first western country to approve a Covid-19 vaccine for general use. The National Health Services are expected to contact recipients directly to arrange appointments to administer it.

The NHS has also noted that the vast majority of the population are expected to be immunized later next year, likely over the course of the first three months.

The campaign was arranged barely a week following the government’s decision to grant emergency approval for the vaccine, however, logistical complications pertaining to its negative 70 degree storage temperature, have slowed down the rollout.

Medicate Director of NHS (England), Professor Stephen Powis, noted that the process is a “marathon not a sprint.”

The vaccine is one among a broad range that have been rapidly funded and developed all across the globe. Versions from China and Russia have already been in use for the last few months.
