Disney expects that its streaming service will have more than 260m subscribers by 2024 following a successful first year.

The entertainment giant has revealed an action-packed shows made for Disney Plus, which include more Star Wars spin-offs.

It already has 87m subscribers following the launch of the service in November 2019. The number could further increase to between 230m and 260m in four years’ time, tripling its previous forecast.

Netflix, the un-disputed market leader in video streaming, has 195m paying customers. However, Disney is hoping to capture more subscribers with £11billion of annual investment in content development, funding 35 new television series overall.

These ambitious series include Star Wars shows with franchise stars Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen repeating their roles of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader).

The Star Wars content would follow the critical achievement of The Mandalorian, the flagship show for Disney Plus’s launch.

Other series include the Marvel superheroes franchise and there will be more Pixar animations.
