HOLLYWOOD, USA (CWBN)_ 8-year-old Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of famous American singers Beyoncé and Jay-Z, was nominated for a Grammy under the Best Music Video (Music Video/ Film) category alongside her mother.

While the official list of Grammy nominations has been out for a while, Blue was added to the nominations list just recently for her part in the music video “Brown Skin Girl”. This is not unusual – minor roles are updated to the list very often in the weeks following the announcement.

The video features many popular African American celebrities and speaks about body positivity, with a special focus on the themes of skin colour and racism. Blue sings the closing notes but does not sing much during the rest of the video.

If she were to be declared the winner, Blue, who will turn 9 in January just days before the awards ceremony, would not be the youngest person to win. Leah Peasall of The Peasall Sisters is the youngest Grammy nominee (and winner). Her sisters Hannah and Sarah were aged 11 and 14 respectively. Billboard states that Deleon Richards is the youngest performer to receive an individual nomination; she was nominated at 8 1/2 years old for a 1985 award for best soul/gospel performance (female) for her album Deleon.

However, not everyone is thrilled about the announcement. Critics question Blue’s qualifications for being nominated, stating that she has only made it to the list because of her parents. Blue’s nomination has been compared to other nominations and awards received by children and relatives of popular celebrities, with critics stating that nepotism in Hollywood needs to end.
