NEW DELHI, India (CWBN)_ Official data revealed that India’s total number of COVID-19 cases passed the 10 million mark on Saturday (December 19). India has the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, according to official data; second only to the United States.

Official data revealed that India had a little over 25,000 cases in the past 24 hours. The health ministry reports that the country had 9.6 million recoveries (total), and a little over 145,136 deaths (total).

While the state of the pandemic is not favourable, it seems that it is much worse in the United States. A popular international news agency reports that the United States has a quarter of the population of India but has been reporting around 10 times the number of new cases.

The state of the pandemic in India has been decreasing in recent weeks, with the rate of recoveries even overtaking the new cases reported in a given day last month.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hoping that the Serum Institute of India (SII), one of the country’s most prominent vaccine producers, will be able to begin production on their vaccine soon after being granted emergency use authorisation. India’s vaccine drive is expected to begin in January, according to experts.
