Chennai, India (CU)_ A 15-year-old patient from Bangladesh was successfully treated for cancer by the Apollo Cancer Centre in Teynampet, Chennai, using the new Tubeless VATS technique, which was first performed in India. The patient named MD Nahid Hasan of Bangladesh was detected with a rare form of Ewing’s Sarcoma in the left femur – left thigh bone. It is a very rare form of cancerous tumor which develops around the bones in one of the soft tissues.

The patient was admitted in Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, in December 2020 as he slowly developed metastatic lumps in the upper lobe of his left lung during the lockdown time. Doctors suggested a minimally invasive operation to remove the lung metastatic nodule. Tubeless VATS (Video Aided Thoracoscopic Surgery) was prescribed for the patient.

Dr Abhijith Das, Thoracic Oncologist Consultant, Apollo Hospitals, told reporters on Thursday that the Tubeless VATS technique has many benefits over the traditional treatment as it is minimally invasive. He said, “This means the procedure is less painful, involves minimal loss of blood and recovery is quicker. The technique also demonstrates minimal effect on the patient’s immune state”. Dr. Abhijith said that in the latest procedure, post-operative infections and complications are less likely to arise after the operation, and issues related to intubation, chest drainage and urinary catheterization can also be avoided.

Identically, another patient from Bangladesh also developed a large left lower lobe lung mass. He was initially affected by COVID-19 in 2020. The doctors informed that the patient was also treated with bilateral VATS successfully at the Apollo Hospitals and recovered well. Preetha Reddy, Apollo Hospitals Vice-Chairperson, said the hospital has been heading India’s cancer war with the latest technologies and programs to boost cancer patients’ future healthcare.
