New York, USA (CU)_ US President Joe Biden warned that China would pay a price for its human rights violations. The President said this when he responded to queries on a televised event on the Asian nation’s handling of Muslim minorities in its western region of Xinjiang. Chinese President Xi Jinping has faced global condemnation for keeping the Uighur community in confinement camps and other violations of human rights. When pressed on the issue at the town hall event, President Biden said, “Well, there will be repercussions for China and he knows that”.

The President said that the United States will strengthen its global position to voice out for human rights and assured that he will work with the international community to solve the issue. During his first official trip after taking over office, President Biden spoke about China’s domination. He said, “China is trying very hard to become a world leader and to get that moniker and be able to do that they have to gain the confidence of other countries. As long as they are engaged in activity that is contrary to basic human rights, it is going to be hard for them to do that”.

President Biden stressed the US priority of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific zone, where the United States and China are major strategic competitors, during his two-hour phone conversation with President Xi this month. He also expressed concern over the coercive and unfair trade policies and rights issues of Beijing, such as its Hong Kong crackdown, the Xinjiang imprisonment, and increasingly assertive behavior in Asia, particularly against Taiwan, which China claims to be its own.
