Hijab controversy: Let’s avoid religious crisis of any kind – Emir of Ilorin

Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Chiefs and Emir of llorin, Aljahi Abrahim Sulu-Gambari has walked into the hijab controversy in Kwara State and urged the Islam and Christian faithful’s to embrace peace and avoid religious calamities.

His plea comes in the wake of the  fierce row between the Muslims and Christians  which occurred  at the Surulere Baptist School in llorin on Wednesday as  grant aided schools  closed by the state over the  use of Hijab resumed its classes.

According to reports, at least 20 persons were subject to injuries in the row and the areas was apparently deserted by motorists for hours.

In an effort to maintain law and order in the area, the Police has to use tear gas to disperse the mob.

The traditional ruler appealed to believers and advocates of   the two religions to live in peace and harmony with one another for stability and prosperity to prevail in the state.

According to a statement by his spokesman, the Emir described the controversy over the use of the Hijab by female students of the grant-aided schools as unwarranted.

He said,” No group or individual, should take laws into their hands”.

According to the Emir, “llorin is known for peaceful co-existence nationwide” and also says” let us remain calm and resolute to the fact that the position of the law is clear on the matter.”

The Emir, said there is no fight between Muslims and Christians, Islam and Christianity preach peace and harmony.

“Let us also avoid division and enmity in our society,” he added.

Alhaji Sulu Gambari, also appealed to religious leaders to prevail on their followers to respect constituted authorities in their dealings with members of the public.

As recalled by the Daily Post, the Christian community in Kwara rejected girls from ten grant aided schools in llorin   from wearing the hijab to school and commanded the return of their schools to the original owners.
