First female Managing Director of a Commercial Bank.

Dhaka, Bangladesh (CU)_ The Trust Bank appointed the first female to this prestigious role. The decision was made on Monday by the private sector lender. This appointment was approved and finalized by the central bank. In the past, the Acting Managing Director was the highest position held by some female bankers in commercial banks in Bangladesh.  Humaira Azam became the first female Managing Director of a Bangladeshi commercial bank.

Humaira graduated from the University of Dhaka with honors and master’s degrees in international relations. She began her career in banking sector in 1990 at ANZ Grindlays Bank as a management trainee officer. Thereafter, she worked for a number of local and international banks, as well as non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs). She became the Managing Director of IPDC Finance Ltd in 2009. She was promoted to CEO during the time when the NBFI was struggling due to a large number of defaulted loans. She was instrumental in assisting IPDC Finance in its recovery from a terrible crisis.

Humaira also worked for HSBC Bangladesh and Standard Chartered Bangladesh, among others. In 2012, she was employed in Bank Asia, where she worked as a Deputy Managing Director. In 2018, Trust Bank hired her for the post of Additional Managing Director. At present, she is working as the Acting Managing Director for Trust Bank. Moreover, the government had also named Mahtab Jabin as the first female CEO of Probashi Kallyan Bank, a specialized state-run bank.
