Port Louis (CU)_ In view of the most recent scientific evidence on the spread of the new Covid strain, Omicron, Mauritius has enforced further arrival restrictions on flights arriving from South Africa to Mauritius with immediate effect. Passengers who arrived on MK852 from Johannesburg to Mauritius were subject to enhanced health screening. Apart from the PCR tests conducted on the incoming passengers, travelers were also asked to adhere to a minimum seven-day quarantine period in their hotel rooms.
Until further notice, incoming flights from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Namibia, and Eswatini are restricted and cargo flights will continue indefinitely. Air Mauritius operated its final outgoing flight from Mauritius to Johannesburg on Sunday. Moreover, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will arrange additional emergency repatriation flights for Mauritian citizens, residents, and Occupational Permit Holders.
A representative from Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority spoke about the travel ban. He said, “We acknowledge the significant disruption which result from such measures, particularly for the 176 passengers who arrived on MK852 on 27 November 2021 but they are essential to ensure the health and wellness of all. The passengers involved are being given all possible support in these difficult times for all.”
In response to the ban, South African Airways, which resumed operations in September, said on Twitter that it will suspend flights to Mauritius with immediate effect. South African Airways said, “SAA has put a bigger aircraft with a larger capacity on this route”. After an 18-month lockdown, Mauritius reopened its borders to foreign travelers on 1 October. More than 100,000 travellers have visited the island since then.
