KAMPALA (CU)_Earlier this year, a draft mining law was presented to the Parliament of Uganda for debate. The bill, which received cabinet approval in April, is expected to repeal the 2003 Mining Act, with increased focus on state participation in the country’s extractive industry. Echoing the view of the other state authorities across the region, the government of Uganda is seeking to extract more value from the country’s natural resource wealth, from which international mining firms continue to benefit unfairly at the expense of locals.
