Ontario, Canada (CU)_ Trillium Health Partners (THP) and Trillium Health Partners Foundation have been awarded a $105 million grant from philanthropist Peter Gilgan and The Peter Gilgan Foundation, which is the largest and historic single donation madeto a Canadian hospital. Gilgan established Mattamy Homes and he is the chairman and CEO of Mattamy Asset Management.
The huge contribution will assist THP in the construction of Canada’s biggest and highly modern hospital, named The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, as well as the expansion and renovation of the Queensway Health Center, named as The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Center. According to a media release, the projects mark the highest capital investment in Canadian history and will add over 600 beds throughout the organization, for around 2,000 beds in total, to support community expansion, thereby making THP the biggest hospital in Canada.
Advance work on the Mississauga Hospital site has already begun, and the new Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital project is scheduled to begin in 2025. Construction on the Queensway Health Tower is scheduled to begin in 2024. The present 62-year-old facility will be replaced by the latest Mississauga Hospital, and a new patient tower at Queensway Health Center will provide the required medical care and rehabilitation services.
According to Gilgan’s statement, “As the community has grown and diversified, so have the demands on the hospital”. He further spoke about the challenges posed by the pandemic on the healthcare sector. He said, “The additional struggles presented by the pandemic have underscored the critical need for modern health care facilities and challenged our health care workers like never before. THP will combine bold new infrastructure with a proactive approach to community health — it’s the complete solution we urgently need.”
