KENYA – The newspapers also highlighted a looming dilemma in the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition over the choice of its presidential flagbearer, Raila Odinga’s running mate, in the August polls.

According to the publication, the DP, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leader, has informed Amani National Congress (ANC) boss Musalia Mudavadi and Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula about his decision to name a running mate from Mt Kenya a few weeks ago. Mudavadi will instead be named Finance minister, while Wetang’ula will take over as Senate speaker

Wetang’ula, a lawyer, will succeed his tribemate Ken Lusaka who is fighting to become Bungoma governor again. Mudavadi’s party has been agitating for naming their leader as the running mate. Still, Ruto has decided that he will instead settle for someone from either Upper Eastern or Central Kenya.

Under the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition, the women league wants Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua to be named Raila’s running mate in the August 9, 2022, General Election. Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu said their resolve is that the coalition should have a woman as the running mate. The battle for a running mate is expected to spark a rivalry between individuals and members of parties within Azimio, even as Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka insists that he must run alongside Raila in the August political contest. Azimio is expected to name Raila’s running mate before the April 28 deadline set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The Executive has been accused of being one of the biggest hindrances to Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices (CCIOs) performing their legal mandates, making most of them ineffective. The CCIOs accuse various agencies of the government’s executive arm of frustrating their efforts to deliver through budgetary constraints and failure to enforce their decisions. Chief Justice Martha Koome said that the Executive’s continued allocation of meagre funds to CCIOs had hamp [ered their optimal operation. It is a concern that parliament should address.

CCIOs are commissions and offices formed through the constitution and acts of parliament to provide oversight and capacity building and generally improve democracy in Kenya.
