Mumbai, India (CU)_ According to the latest announcement from Sun Pharma, the company intends to introduce a medicine to treat low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. The pharmaceutical giant based in Mumbai stated that a first-in-class oral medication for lowering LDL cholesterol known as Bempedoic Acid will be introduced in India by one of its wholly-owned subsidiaries.

The medicine will be marketed under the brand name Brillo. The medicine is the first of its kind and has a different mode of action as compared to the existing lipid-lowering drugs. People with an inherited genetic abnormality that produces high cholesterol levels or those with an existing cardiac disorder whose cholesterol levels remain elevated despite lifestyle modifications and the administration of the maximum tolerable dose of statins are recommended to take this medication.

Kirti Ganorkar, CEO of Sun Pharma India Business, expressed delight over the new drug. He said, “Sun Pharma is the leader in the cardiovascular segment and a pioneer in lipid-lowering therapy in India. In line with our commitment to introducing novel products, we are launching this first-in-class oral drug, Brillo”. Ganorkar noted that the medication is an innovative therapy option that would aid in the management of high LDL cholesterol in patients with cardiac disease, which is a condition that is increasing at an alarming rate.

India has a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, which is 272 per 1,00,000 people, compared to the global average, which is 235 per 1,00,000 people. Some individuals with high cholesterol levels may not respond well to statins. There is also a set of individuals who are statin-intolerant. For such people, bempedoic acid may be a beneficial choice of therapy. According to the company, the introduction of Brillo will fulfill this substantial unmet demand in India. According to IMS MAT January 2022 statistics, the statin market in India is valued at around INR 4,300 crore.
