Male, Maldives (CU)_ According to Hussain Amru, the State Trading Organization’s (STO) Managing Director, STO now imports only non-hazardous gasoline into the Maldives. The STO’s managing director delivered these views during the IsDB Group Private Sector Forum, held by the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation. The event was entitled, “Evolving Trade Towards Regional Cooperation, Sustainability and Inclusivity.”

Accordingly, it is important to note that STO is the largest organization in the Maldives, delivering security, fuel security, food security, and medical security to the whole nation, in addition to numerous other businesses and services. Amru emphasized that STO takes measures and responsibilities in the domains in which it operates, such as delivering fuel for power generation to the entire dispersed islands of the Maldives.

Amru stated that every island has its own diesel-powered generator and that diesel contains numerous harmful substances, including sulfur, which is not only harmful to the environment but also to human health. As a result, Amru emphasized that they previously imported fuel that had high sulfur content, a substance that impairs the respiratory system and is one of the major causes of cancer. However, the corporation has recently taken the high road and started purchasing gasoline with a substantially lower sulfur concentration, despite the fact that it is far more expensive.

Amru further mentioned that STO has developed a fuel laboratory to make sure that no bad gasoline enters the Maldives. The STO’s managing director elucidated the importance of evaluating and reporting on sustainability in order to inspire businesses to initiate greener projects or do tasks far greener and much cleaner.

Hussain Amru, MD of STO, stated, “We used to bring high-sulfur fuel which is of course cheaper, but we have come down from 2.5 percent sulfur content to 0.01 percent sulfur content, it is expensive but we have actually done that.” He added, “We at STO take sustainability reporting like religion, it actually creates awareness and also most importantly, it actually continuously reminds us not to lose focus on the issues of climate change.”
