The most recent version of Sony’s PlayStation 5, which was released earlier this month, lost weight, and according to a recent report, the console will lose even more weight in 2019.

In September 2023, a thinner PS5 will be released, according to a claim published on Insider Gaming on Monday. There are rumors that the new console won’t have an integrated disc drive. To keep the design thin, it will instead have a removable disc drive that connects through USB-C. The console will otherwise have the same internal components.

According to Insider Gaming’s unnamed sources, the removable drive will also be sold separately in case the original is harmed. Players who purchased the less expensive Digital Edition of the PS5, which does not include a disc drive, could add the functionality with a USB-C drive.

A request for comment from Sony did not immediately receive a response.

Three years have passed since the launch of the PS5, and it’s possible that Sony will introduce new hardware at or around that time in 2023. The PlayStation VR 2 headgear will debut sometime in 2023. The first iteration of the virtual reality device was released in 2016, only a few weeks before the PS4 was downsized.
