India (Commonwealth Union)_ According to the latest statement from the Ministry of Electronics and IT, India will assume the leadership of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence for 2022-2023 at the conference of the organization being held in Tokyo on November 21. According to the ministry, in the election for Council Chair, India gained over two-thirds of the first-preference votes, while Canada and the United States came in second and third place, respectively. As a result, they were elected to the two extra government seats on the Steering Committee.
At the handover event in Tokyo, India will be represented by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT. “Close on the heels of assuming the presidency of the G20, a league of the world’s largest economies, India will take over the chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), an international initiative to support responsible and human-centric development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI),” the statement read.
The GPAI comprises of 25 member states, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and Singapore. In 2020, India became a founding member of the organization. The statement added that India will be represented by Rajeev Chandrasekhar at the GPAI meeting on November 21, 2022 in Tokyo for the symbolic takeover from France, the departing Council Chair. The five government seats for the 2022-2023 Steering Committee will be held by Japan, which is the Lead Council Chair and Co-Chair of the Steering Committee; France, which is the outgoing Council Chair; India, which is the incoming Council Chair; Canada and the United States.
According to the statement, India occupying the chair also denotes how the world today considers India as a trusted technology partner who has always advocated for the ethical use of technology for enhancing the lives of its citizens. By 2035, AI is anticipated to contribute around USD 967 billion to the Indian economy. By 2025, it is expected to contribute USD 450–500 billion to India’s GDP, representing 10% of the country’s USD 5 trillion GDP objective.
