AFRICA ( commonwealth Union ) _ The world’s strongest anti-gay legislation were enacted by Ugandan parliament on Tuesday, making some offenses punishable by death and imposing sentences of up to 20 years in prison for anyone who identify as LGBTQ+.

The new law represents an additional crackdown on LGBTQ+ persons in a nation where same-sex relationships were already forbidden and subject to life in prison. According to Reuters, it prohibits a number of actions, including conspiring to engage in homosexuality as well as encouraging and abetting homosexual behavior.

The legislation specifies that cases involving “aggravated homosexuality”—a broad term used in the legislation to describe sex acts carried out against minors, people with physical or mental disabilities, by “serial offenders,” or involving any of these circumstances—may result in the death penalty.

The revisions, which were put out by the chairperson for legal and parliamentary affairs Robina Rwakoojo, stated that if a  person commits the offence of aggravated homosexuality and is liable, on conviction, to suffer death. The Anti Homosexuality Bill 2023 was presented to parliament by opposition MP Asuman Basalirwa, who stated that  the intention was  to protect our church culture; the legal, religious, and traditional family values of Ugandans from acts that are likely to promote sexual promiscuity in this country.

The ultimate goal of the bill was to establish a comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect traditional family values, our diverse culture, and our faiths, by outlawing any kind of sexual activity between people of the same sex as well as the encouragement or recognition of such activity, The death sentence provision was removed from a bill that the nation’s lawmakers voted in favour of a proposal for life in prison. Ultimately, that rule was overturned.
