Singapore wins Asia’s Smartest City title!

Singapore (Commonwealth Union)_ According to the 2023 Smart City Index, published by The Smart City Observatory, Singapore has been ranked as the smartest city in Asia and the seventh smartest city in the world. The index ranked 141 cities worldwide based on how well they make use of technology to address challenges and improve the quality of life of people. Zurich was ranked first on the index, followed by Oslo and Canberra in the second and third places, respectively.

The top ten smartest cities are from European, Australian, and Asian locations, with six super champions, including Zurich, Oslo, Singapore, Beijing, Seoul, and Hong Kong, consistently striving towards improving their performance. The top ten smartest cities are: 1. Zurich, Switzerland, 2. Oslo, Norway, 3. Canberra, Australia, 4. Copenhagen, Denmark, 5. Lausanne, Switzerland, 6. London, England, 7. Singapore, 8. Helsinki, Finland, 9. Geneva, Switzerland, and 10. Stockholm, Sweden.

The report combines both survey results and hard data to assess the extent to which technology has improved residents’ lives. The data was gathered from more than 20,000 residents across the 141 cities surveyed, with questions covering aspects such as affordable housing, road traffic, green solutions, employment structures, and technologies built to address concerns. Respondents were also asked how comfortable they were with technologies like face recognition and sharing personal data to improve traffic congestion.

Singapore has consistently held the seventh position on the list, having also secured this spot in 2020 and 2021, while the index was not released in 2022. The top 20 places are dominated by Asian and European cities, with these regions accounting for all of the super champions. Further, Singapore has consistently proven its commitment to being at the forefront of technology and innovation, having invested heavily in smart city initiatives to improve the quality of life of its citizens.
