Health may depend on being an optimist

Multiple studies shows that you can reduce the risk of heart disease, cognitive impairment and stroke by having a strong level of optimism. Most studies have also linked optimism with greater longevity.

According to research which was conducted by the Harvard’s T.H Chan school of public health in collaboration with colleagues at other universities, it was found that, an average, old women who lived 4.4 years longer, were those who scored high levels of optimism., than those with lowest scores. Results held true across ethnicities and races.

People who are optimistic lead to a better life, where they cope up well with challenges, experience and less stress compared to the people with less positive attitudes. They often have stronger network with friends and family who can provide assistance and they are more likely to exercise and eat well.

People who are optimistic tend to engage better at regulating their emotions and effectively solving their problems. People who are having a good quality of life and enjoying a good health may experience optimism. But optimism isn’t confined to those who are doing well. Studies suggest that it can be cultivated through concerted interventions and can be through genetically heritable.

Patricia, a widow of seven years who lived alone said” I’ve fairly lived a good life, but I have had my traumas. I think it’s my faith and optimism which has pulled me through.”

Grace Harvey a retired teacher and devoted Baptist from La Grange, Georgia said’ that under any circumstances, always look for the best to happen and with the help of God you can work through any situation.

Ron Fegley a retired physicist from California said “I think in the long run things will get better, so I am always positive about the future.” He also mentioned that science is an important part of his life, since science is always on the upwards path, for a while people may have the wrong ideas but gradually new data and experiments come along and correct things.

You are an optimist if you weigh on the good side and that has positive implications for your health in the future.
