Australian (Commonwealth)_It’s unfortunate that the frequency of cybersecurity attacks on businesses has been on the rise in recent years. According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it was found that 22% of businesses experienced a cyber attack during the 2021-22 financial year. This means that at least one in five businesses fell victim to digital attackers, which is a significant increase compared to the one in 10 businesses affected in 2019-20.

The release of this information by the ABS is crucial because it provides valuable insights to governments and researchers regarding the prevalence, impacts, and nature of cyber attacks. This knowledge helps them identify the areas where support is needed and determine effective strategies to combat such attacks.

Among the different types of cyber threats faced by businesses, scams or fraudulent activities were the most common, affecting 16% of businesses. Malicious software causing disruptions in systems followed at 5%, and unauthorized access or use accounted for 3% of incidents.

The repercussions of these attacks were substantial. In the 2021-22 period, 34% of businesses reported a loss of time due to managing cybersecurity attacks, 18% experienced service downtime, and 17% witnessed a decline in staff productivity.

To protect themselves, the majority of businesses surveyed (seven in 10) had to implement some form of security measures against hackers. Approximately 60% of businesses regularly updated their virus protection software, recognizing its importance. Additionally, around 37% of businesses ensured regular backups of critical operational data, 20% implemented identity access management protocols, and 13% provided cybersecurity awareness training to their staff.

These statistics highlight the growing need for businesses to be proactive in safeguarding their digital infrastructure. By staying vigilant, regularly updating security systems, backing up critical data, and investing in staff training, businesses can significantly reduce their vulnerability to cyber-attacks. It is essential for businesses to prioritize cybersecurity to protect their finances, secrets, and identities from malicious actors in the digital landscape.
