UK (Commonwealth Union) – A pivotal agreement has been inked between the United Kingdom and Germany, signaling a major stride towards the advancement of the global hydrogen industry, with both nations spearheading its evolution.
Officially signed recently at the UK Embassy in Berlin, the Joint Declaration of Intent was sealed by Lord Callanan, the Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, representing the UK, and Philip Nimmermann, the State Secretary for Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany. This accord solidifies their commitment to collaborate in bolstering international hydrogen trade.
Furthermore, the governments of both countries are dedicated to expediting the integration of low-carbon hydrogen into their respective energy portfolios, setting an exemplary precedent for the expansion of new, environmentally friendly markets. Their joint efforts will focus on advancing groundbreaking and sustainable hydrogen technologies, thereby fostering employment opportunities and stimulating low-carbon investments.
This collaborative partnership builds upon substantial investments made by both nations in the development of hydrogen as a viable alternative fuel source. In the UK, the government is actively supporting the production of low-carbon hydrogen through funding from the £240 million Net Zero Hydrogen Fund and revenue support from the Hydrogen Production Business Model. Meanwhile, in Germany, the government is backing the implementation of the National Hydrogen Strategy with financial backing from the Climate and Transformation Fund, which serves as a catalyst for the growth of the hydrogen market.
Additionally, this partnership will provide a significant impetus to achieving the shared goal of attaining net-zero emissions by 2050, while also enhancing the energy security of both nations. It marks a decisive shift away from reliance on fossil fuels, steering towards cleaner, more reliable, and diversified energy alternatives.
