Aviation and Airlines (Commonwealth Union) _ Air India has reached a significant milestone by inaugurating a large engineering warehouse near Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3. This warehouse spans 54,000 sq. ft and can store over one million engineering spares, supporting maintenance and repairs for Air India’s fleet. The centralized facility is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and enhance control over inventory. This move aligns with Air India’s strategy to strengthen its engineering capabilities, a crucial aspect as it expands its network and fleet. The warehouse will not only benefit Air India but also its subsidiaries, Air India Express and AirAsia India, streamlining operations throughout India. This step reflects the airline’s commitment to quality, professionalism, and investments to support its growth.

As Air India continues to develop its engineering infrastructure, it aims to be better equipped to handle the maintenance requirements of its growing fleet. The focus on efficiency and control over aircraft spares is anticipated to contribute to improved punctuality of flights. Additionally, there are reports suggesting Air India’s interest in the government-owned maintenance repair and operations (MRO) company AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL). This aligns with the airline’s broader efforts to address past challenges and position itself as a competitive player in the aviation industry. With new management at the helm, Air India is strategically investing in various aspects, from engineering capabilities to cargo capacity, to ensure long-term success.

The move towards expanding cargo capacity is noteworthy, considering the airline’s plans to fortify India’s cargo ecosystem. Air India aims to increase cargo-related revenue by growing the belly capacity of its fleet over the next five years. The introduction of widebody aircraft, including the Airbus A350-1000, A350-900, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and Boeing 777X, is expected to significantly boost the airline’s annual cargo capacity. This comprehensive approach, coupled with efforts to integrate advanced IT solutions, reflects the Tata Group’s commitment to addressing operational gaps and running Air India efficiently in the coming years.
