India (Commonwealth Union)_ Nirmala Sitharaman, the Indian Finance Minister, has opted out of contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, citing financial constraints as her primary reason. She conveyed that she lacks the necessary resources required to participate in the electoral process. Addressing the media, Sitharaman disclosed that BJP President JP Nadda had presented her with the opportunity to contest from either Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu. However, she declined the offer, stating, “Party did ask me, after thinking over a week or days, I just went back to say …maybe not.”

Explaining her decision further, Sitharaman expressed concerns about the financial burden associated with running for elections, particularly in states like Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu, where factors like community and religious affiliations often influence electoral outcomes. She emphasized, “I don’t have that kind of money to contest.” Responding to inquiries regarding her financial resources, Sitharaman clarified that her personal income and savings are not funded by the Consolidated Fund of India, highlighting the distinction between her private finances and state funds. She said, “My salary, my earnings, and my savings are mine and not the Consolidated Fund of India”.
