For Experts,Mumbai stands out as one of Asia’s pricier cities, presently positioned as the 21st most expensive in the continent, while Delhi continues at the 30th spot.

These contain healthy employment growth, an expanding middle class, and a robust economy. Despite Mumbai’s rise in global rankings, Sharma highlighted that the Indian city maintains overall affordability compared to many international counterparts, which can be very useful for multinational corporations and Indian firms seeking to attract global talent. In certain cost categories, Pune and Mumbai lead in energy and utility expenses, reflecting their status as commercial hubs with large infrastructure demands. Transportation costs are extremely high in Mumbai, followed closely by Bengaluru. Conversely, alcohol and tobacco items are the least expensive in Delhi but most expensive in Chennai among the surveyed Indian cities.

Other Indian cities featured in the Mercer survey include Kolkata (ranked 207), Pune (205), Chennai (189), Bengaluru (195), New Delhi (164) and Hyderabad (202).Each city’s ranking provides valuable understanding for businesses and expatriates navigating cost considerations across different regions in India. Overall, while Mumbai’s standing as India’s priciest city highlights its economic dynamism and urban development, the survey also highlights the diverse cost dynamics within India’s metropolitan areas. Understanding these nuances remains crucial for companies devising strategies to manage expatriate assignments and certify competitive compensation packages tailored to local realities.
