Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – Sir Keir Starmer has refuted claims that he is offering “false hope” to steelworkers in Port Talbot, as the town’s final blast furnace is set to close next month.
The UK government is currently negotiating to protect jobs at Tata Steel, where thousands of employees are at risk of being laid off. The Prime Minister emphasized that the government will do everything they can to help, but cautioned that he will not sugarcoat the fact that this is a difficult situation.
He made these remarks while speaking to the press at a wind farm in Carmarthenshire during a two-day visit to Wales. As prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer continues to refute the Conservative government’s accusation that Labour gave Tata Steel employees false optimism when in opposition.
Although assistance for supply chain companies has been announced by the incoming Labour government, this was decided upon at the cross-party transition board, whose mandate and funding were established by the previous Westminster government.
In the meantime, Tata Steel is moving forward with its intentions. In September, the second of its two blast furnaces will close, and employees have already been urged to volunteer for redundancy.
