The Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre, dedicated to preserving the town’s rich history—including its role in the construction of the iconic Millennium Falcon for Star Wars, is thriving due to the unwavering dedication of its volunteers and trustees.
This independent museum, located in the historic Royal Dockyard Chapel, earned the UK Museum Accreditation Standard in July 2023. This accreditation, overseen by the Welsh Government in Wales, ensures the museum’s sustainability and protects its collections for the future.
The Centre boasts a unique collection that chronicles the 200-year history of the town and the renowned Royal Dockyard. Among its highlights is a permanent exhibition celebrating the creation of the Millennium Falcon in Pembroke Dock, detailing the ship’s journey from its initial designs to construction and the challenges of moving it across the country.
Additionally, visitors can explore a full-scale replica cockpit of a Short Sunderland flying boat, a famous aircraft once stationed at the former RAF Pembroke Dock.
Achieving museum accreditation also guarantees high standards of care, allowing future generations to appreciate these collections. In Wales, the Welsh Government directly provides museum development support.
The Welsh Government’s draft Priorities for Culture, is presently under consultation, which underscores the vital role of small, independent museums in preserving local heritage and telling community stories. The document also highlights the significant contributions of volunteers, particularly in volunteer-run institutions like the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre.
Jane Hutt, the Cabinet Secretary for Culture, indicated that the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre is instrumental in sharing the fascinating stories of its community and It is evident that the volunteers as well as trustees are deeply passionate about the area’s history and are dedicated to preserving and sharing its legacy.
