Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has taken significant steps to improve the welfare of both workers and retirees by approving the payment of a new minimum wage of N70,000. The governor announced this during the 2024 Pensioners’ Day event in Ado Ekiti, marking the start of celebrations for the second anniversary of his administration. Oyebanji emphasized that the new wage policy is now law and will be implemented across the state. He further assured pensioners that their pensions would also undergo consequential adjustments.
During the event, the governor presented N3.5 billion in gratuities to 829 pensioners who retired between 2014 and March 2015. He highlighted his administration’s commitment to addressing the needs of retirees, ensuring they enjoy a dignified post-service life. Oyebanji also underscored the state’s focus on senior citizens’ welfare by announcing the launch of a free health insurance scheme for pensioners. A larger effort to improve state retirees’ well-being includes this program.
So far, Oyebanji’s government has disbursed over N70 billion toward clearing unpaid gratuities. He urged retirees to continue praying for the success of his administration, stressing that improving the financial status of both current and former public servants remains a top priority.
Ekiti’s Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman, Mr. Kolapo Olatunji, lauded the governor for his compassionate policies, which have brought much-needed relief to pensioners. He commended Oyebanji’s leadership for addressing the long-standing concerns of workers and retirees alike.
The state’s Head of Service, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, also expressed appreciation for the retirees’ unwavering support for the government, highlighting the collaborative spirit between the administration and senior citizens.
Additionally, Mr. Joel Akinola, state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), praised Oyebanji’s efforts to improve retirees’ quality of life, promising continued support from the union. National NUP representatives, including Mr. Godwin Abumisi, echoed this sentiment.
Gov. Oyebanji’s proactive approach to worker and retiree welfare underscores his commitment to fostering a more equitable and prosperous Ekiti State. With the implementation of the new minimum wage and enhanced pension benefits, Oyebanji aims to ensure that public servants receive the support they deserve during and after their years of service.
