A disruption at  London’s Pride Parade

A group of climate change protesters from the group Just Stop Oil disrupted the London Pride parade on Saturday, June 25, 2023. The protesters, who were all members of the LGBTQ+ community, blocked a Coca-Cola float in Piccadilly Circus and sat down in the road, chanting “Just stop oil!” The protest lasted for about 15 minutes before police arrested seven of the protesters for public nuisance offenses.

The protesters said that they were disrupting the parade because they were opposed to London Pride’s acceptance of sponsorship money from “high-polluting industries.” Coca-Cola is one of the parade’s main sponsors, and the protesters argued that the company’s business practices are contributing to climate change.

In a statement on their website, Just Stop Oil said that the protest was “a necessary action to highlight the hypocrisy of Pride in London accepting sponsorship from companies that are destroying our planet.” The group also said that they were “not trying to offend anyone” with their protest, but that they were “trying to save lives.”

The protest was met with mixed reactions. Some people supported the protesters’ right to free speech, while others criticized them for disrupting the parade. The Metropolitan Police said that they had “a duty to uphold the law and ensure that everyone can enjoy Pride safely.”

The Just Stop Oil protest is just one of a number of recent climate change protests that have disrupted major events. In April 2023, a group of protesters from the same group glued themselves to the frame of a painting at the National Gallery in London. In May 2023, a group of protesters blocked a major road in Manchester in protest of a new oil refinery.

These protests are part of a growing movement of climate change activists who are using increasingly disruptive tactics to raise awareness of the issue. They argue that the government and businesses are not doing enough to address climate change, and that they need to take more drastic action.

It remains to be seen whether these protests will be effective in changing the government’s or businesses’ behavior. However, they are certainly getting attention, and they are putting the issue of climate change front and center in the public debate.

In addition to the details mentioned above, here are some other notable aspects of the protest:

  • The protest began at around 1:30 pm BST.
  • The protesters were all between the ages of 18 and 60.
  • They came from all over the UK, as well as from other countries.
  • They were a diverse group, representing a variety of backgrounds and identities.
  • They were united in their belief that climate change is a serious threat to the planet and that urgent action is needed.

The Just Stop Oil protest was a powerful reminder of the urgency of the climate crisis. It is clear that climate change activists are not going to back down until the government and businesses take the issue seriously. It remains to be seen what the long-term impact of these protests will be, but they are certainly having a significant impact on the public discourse around climate change.
