The Valletta Baroque Festival returns for a week, with more concerts at varied venues.

Amongst the highlights, Simon Schembri is expected to join the Valletta Baroque Ensemble for the Italian Guitar Extravaganza. Baroque music by Boccherini & Giuliani at the Museum of Archaeology, Valletta, is at 1930hrs on Tuesday, 20 January.

Le Grande Chapelle will perform Tomas Luis Victoria’s Marian motets of Vidi Speciosam Mass (1592), blending Renaissance melodic lines with mediaeval polyphony, at St. Paul’s Basilica, Rabat, at 1930 hrs. on Wednesday, 21 January.

Goldberg Reflections will take place at the Casino Maltese at 1930hrs on Thursday, 22 January. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra forms an intriguing blend of transcriptions and new compositions, inspired by Goldberg, while performing with multi-award-winning German pianist Nils Liepe and German classical violinist Niklas Liepe.

The festival is expected to reach its climax with the opera Pelopida, a recently rediscovered opera by Girolamo Abos, at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta, on 23 & 25 January. Abos’s opera Pelopida was originally commissioned and performed in Rome’s Teatro Argentina in 1747. Arias, duos and trios have been included in concert programmes over the years. However, this is the 1st time in living memory that the opera will be performed in its entirety.

At 2030 hours on January 24, BaRock at the Salesian Theatre in Sliema will feature a fusion of rock and baroque classics. The Rock Troupers and the Pro Muzika Ensemble will present reworkings of iconic pieces from Bach to Jon Lord and from Vivaldi to Pink Floyd.
