A Titbit of Good News as We Say Goodbye to 2022 – Part 2

In the previous article, we highlighted good news that changed the world for the better. While we can all agree that 2022 was a year for the history books with many things happening around the world, there is good news which can be shared as we bid goodbye. With the Russian-Ukrainian war, overturning of federal abortion rights, violation of women in Iran and so much more, the year has been punctuated with a lot of horror-stricken events. However, amidst all this, there has been a silver lining!

More Countries Abolish Death Penalty

According to the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, 111 out of 200 countries have now totally ended the practice of sentencing death penalties. In the past year, Papua New Guinea, the Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea passed laws which abolished death penalties in these nations.

Scotland Removes Pricing on Period Products

Around the world, period products are heavily taxed, further increasing period poverty. As a measure to end this, and to ensure that all females had access to proper menstrual hygiene, Scotland became the first country in the world to distribute these for free. Sanitary products are made available at libraries, gyms and community centres, allowing anyone who needs them, to use it for free.

The Universe Captured Like Never Before

In July of this year, the James Webb telescope delivered the first coloured image which was the deepest and the most infrared image of the universe thus far, according to NASA. The photograph is of the galaxies formed nearly 13 billion years ago after the Big Bang Theory. 

Since then, the telescope has been deemed as the most powerful ever sent into space, delivering images from the unknown corners of the universe, paving the path towards significant progress in astronomical research.
