African scientist calls for favorable policies to encourage biotechnology

Nairobi, Kenya (CU)_ According to an African scientist, African countries should focus on enacting new policies along with enhanced governance to encourage biotechnology adoption in the continent. At a virtual conference in Nairobi, Emmanuel Okogbenin, director of program development and commercialization at the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), said that strong policies are needed to advance seed system development and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063 on transformation.

Okogbenin highlighted the need for developing seed systems in the continent. He said, “For Africa to maximize the benefits of investment and science for improved prosperity of farmers and stakeholders as well as its economic growth and development, it is crucial to develop the seed systems for scaling technologies”.
