deliberately designed to manage the required protracted stay of such patients in the hospital. According to the doctors, a BMT follow-up OPD has been established near the center to keep these immunocompromised patients away from other patients, thereby minimizing their chance of contracting secondary infections.

According to the statement, on Saturday, to commemorate Marrow Donors’ Day, Apollo Hospital sponsored a survivor meet-up with their donors. Discovering a genetically matched donor is a wonder of life; hence, the meeting provided a wonderful chance to encourage millions of additional patients who require a bone marrow transplant, as well as millions of willing donors who can donate a gift of life.

Gaurav Kharya, clinical lead at Centre for BMT and CT and senior consultant, paediatric haematology, oncology and immunology, at the hospital, highlighted the symptoms of the disease. He said, “The common symptoms of these patients included anemia, fever, persistent jaundice, very low levels of energy, frequent blood transfusions, bleeding manifestations, increased risk of infections and pain to name a few. The only curative treatment for the majority of these disorders is by offering a bone marrow transplant.” He added, “For any patient to undergo a BMT, preferably a 10/10 HLA matched donor is required, which sometimes can be siblings, rarely parents or an unrelated donor”.
