The Aynak Copper Mine is the world’s second largest copper ore body which had been paused due to instability in the economic climate as a consequence of the pandemic. However, talks to resume the mine are in order, according to reports generated from the area.
An employee of Chinese mining giant Metallurgical Group Corp (MCC), the company in charge of the Aynak copper project hinted at the resumption of the mine. He said, “We have around a dozen Chinese staff returning to Afghanistan to continue the ordinary dialogue with the local government while maintaining the camp at the mine,” indicating that work at the mine may be resumed in near future.
A meeting between Wang Yu, Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan, and Sheikh Shahabuddin Delawar, Afghan minister of mine and petroleum was held to discuss restarting the project with an outline of when to start and how work should be resumed.
